Since 2006 WPC has sent teams of workers to Gulfport, Mississippi, to help with the reconstruction of this still-devastated area. The rewards of this work have been astounding; we have been fortunate to establish warm and ongoing relationships with the homeowners we have helped, and it has been incredibly gratifying to develop and use skills we didn't know we had! In many cases we have been able to actually witness the completion of a number of construction projects, enabling displace families to return to their homes. Many members of our Youth Group have participated with us; what a joy to witness their enthusiasm and energy, and what a wonderful message this sends to the courageous residents of this area, who continue to voice their conviction and gratitude for the sustenance provided by volunteer groups such as ours. A sixth, and probably final team will return to Gulfport from Oct.9th through 13th, 2008. Please contact Sonny Kern sonnykern@aol.com, and please join us!

This will be the 27th trip to Mission AT The Eastward for WPC. As in past years, we will be helping make homes warmer and more secure against the Maine winters. Most importantly, we will be demonstrating God's Love. Carpentry skills are NOT a requirement to participate. In 2006 WPC formed a covenant with Covenant To Care of Fairfield County to adopt-a-social worker and the heartfelt and many times very tangible requirements of the very needy families and children of Fairfield County. This agency is directly involved with the county social services in the rescue and often times removal of children from homes that can no longer provide the safety and protection required to house a child. In a direct liaison with the assigned social worker, we as a congregation have the opportunity to contribute the needed items in anything from furnishings to bare necessities. The needs are unpredicted and often urgent as the members of WPC answer a call for what is needed. Of course there is also the blessing of birthday and even Christmas gifts or food baskets to be distributed!
The congregation of WPC has a long history of involvement and support for the local DVCC. Some of our very own provided safehouses for these families in need during the early formation of the crisis center. We continue to be avid supporters in mission contribution and active board representation within the DVCC agency. Volunteers with the ability to go to the necessary training and preparation programs are always being sought.
