JOINT ADULT EDUCATIONJan. 13, 20, 27, Feb. 3, 10, 9:00 AM, Conference Library: In 2000, the nations of the world, including the United States, agreed to a platform of action known as "The United Nations Millennium Development Goals." They include targets for very significant improvements in education of children, in healthcare focused on eradicating malaria and HIV/AIDS, in environmental sustainability in areas subject to deforestation and soil depletion, in gender equality, and in economic development for the poor through such measures as micro-financing. Collectively, these measures are designed to cut extreme poverty in half by 2015.

The Adult Ed Sunday morning group will study the problem of global poverty and how it affects, or should affect, our own lives and goals. The group will use as its text the pamphlet, "Eradicating Global Poverty, A Christian Study Guide on the Millennium Development Goals" by Lallie B. Lloyd.

As part of the program, we are extremely fortunate to have addressing both the class and an Adult Forum for our entire congregation Mr. Chip Lyons. Formerly the head of UNICEF, he is now the Director of Special Initiatives for the Global Development Program of the Gates Foundation. In these roles, he has been intimately involved in work to implement the Millennium Goals since their establishment. He can describe both the overview of this work and the specifics of what has been done to meet the Goals and of what remains to be done and how it will be accomplished.

MANNA HOUSE: The second Tuesday of each month, volunteers from WPC help serve a meal to hungry and homeless people in South Norwalk. Set-up and preparation begins at 11:30 AM and the meal is served at 1:00 PM. We also need people to donate food as well as help prepare the meals in the WPC kitchen that will be taken to Manna House. If you would be willing to help in any way, please call Mary Marquardt at 544-8622. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated!
